@Pingu57 Peter, inderdaad vier ons twee Nieuwjare! In China the 1st of January is a public holiday. but it is not really celebrated. The BIG one is Chinese New Year or Spring Festival which takes place - as you have said - in February. The dates are connected to the Lunar calendar so it changes from year to year.
As Zuid-Afrikaner is ek Protestant (Nederduits-Gereformeerd) en vier natuurlik ook Kerst op 25 December. In China, though it is just another shopping day and it is not really celebrated. I celebrated with a tub of Haagen Das icecream (even though it is zero degrees outside!)

Is het Chinese Nieuwjaar een meerdaags feest Heinrich? of is het 1 dag feesten en daarna weer het gewone leven oppakken?

Da's domIk ben atheïste (mijn leven lang al, mijn ouders waren het ook) en heb domweg erg weinig met kerst.
Daarbij doordat ik eigen baas ben kost het gewoon geld.

It feels quite strange to be posting here - Bluenose seems to have taken over my modelbuilding activities lately, but there was no way that I was going to end the year without returning - at least once - to my big girl! With my wood that has arrived from the Admiraal, I wanted to get the galjoen done.
As all Kolderstok builders are well aware, this is what faces us when we have to make roosters - and since roosters form a big part of the galjoen, this is the challenge for now.
Here you can see the notched sections from left to right while the straight pieces are inserted into the notches and gently pressed into position.
Now if I may be excused for listing a pet hate, it is the completely out-of-scale size of the roosters that I see on most models - they are simply way too big. Luckily, Kolderstok does not make this mistake - but there is a trade-off. This is a job that requires plenty of patience and the whisperings of sweet-nothings into the ear of these parts which are not the most co-operative of sorts. With these done, it was time to mix the special cocktail.
PVA lijm
Vermeng met warm water om die mix makliker te maak.
Daarna word die houtlijm goed in al die nooks en crannies ingewerk en tijd gegee om goed droog te word.
After that, the individual units are then cut to size and glued to the centre piece of the galjoen. When properly dried the edges are cut to size and the side-pieces are glued into the position.
After I had left the glue to dry for a good four hours, I removed the clamps and was very happy with how it turned out. MARRE toe ik na die plaatje kijk ....
n "Rookie" MIstake !!!
The reality is that no one will see that in real life as the bowsprit - which is quite a substantial piece of wood - sits on top of that as well. I can redo the assembly, but then run the risk that it may not turn out as well as this one did structurally - it is just not worth the effort and risk.
En so pas die galjoen (net los neergesit) op die Haarlem.
En daarmee mij vriende, draai ons die boeg na 2021!. Ek wens jullie almal n gesonde Nieuwjaar met baie en suksesvolle scheepsbouw!

Bijzonder mooi wat je laat zien en dat het rooster verkeerd om zit valt straks niet meer op.

@Wodkadrinker Hello Cor. Yes - I am a slow builder and now the marketing of the Bluenose kit is taking up all of my time - but I'm back on the Haarlem!

..... enne probeer daar te voorkomen dat er nog iets onze kant opkomt, we hebben nu onderhand wel genoeg gehad

Heel fijn dat je weer tijd gevonden hebt voor de Haarlem mijn vriend, en je hebt inderdaad mooie roosters gemaakt, but will your engineer/ directievleugel let you off the hook regarding this little mistake? Veel belangrijker, ga jij jezelf hier niet aan irriteren??
Verder natuurlijk een heel fijn uiteinde en een goed, en gezond begin van het jaar 2021 voor jou en Anna

@Pingu57 Hello me vriend! Nee wat, Peter - die foutjie gaan ek nie oor wakker bly nie. Ek kan die galjoen oormaak, maar dan maak ek dalk weer n ander fout! En om nog een te maak wat so mooi pas soos die een, is nie die moeite werd nie. In realiteit (nie so vergroot deur die kamera nie) en met die boegspriet wat bo-op kom, dink ek nie mens sal dit sommer sien nie. Baie dankie vir die Niuwjaarswense - dieselfde vir jou en die familie!
